Named for one of the original Duke Endowment trustees and opened in 1930, Perkins Library is the core of the university library system. Twice expanded, the library now houses collections in the humanities and social sciences, public documents and maps, rare books, manuscripts, special collections, university archives, study areas and computer clusters. A $55 million expansion and renovation begun in 2003 includes the five-story Bostock Library building and the von der Heyden Pavilion.
The main entrance to the Library is now in the Gateway arch between the Perkins and Bostock buildings. To reach the new library entrance from the quad in front of Perkins, turn left at the end of the Old Law (Languages) building and follow the walkway into the arched gateway. Bostock can also be approached from the Fitzpatick Center (CIEMAS).
