The university‘s main administration building, the Allen Building completed the construction of the West Campus academic quadrangle when it opened in 1954. Named for George A. Allen, who oversaw the construction of the university‘s East and West campuses after James B. Duke‘s death, the Allen Building is home to many top-level administrative offices, the departments of English and Classical Studies, and Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. In the foyer hangs the portrait of African-American architect Julian Abele, the principal designer of Duke‘s West Campus.
