Co-Founder and President, Benjamin Duke, brought Erwin Mills to Main Street in 1893, a year after Trinity College. The mills, two large buildings and a water tower, were erected on Ninth and Main. Erwin Mills merged with Burlington Industries in 1970. In 1986, Burlington sold the factory to the J.P. Stevens Co., which closed the mill. The one remaining building is now the residential and office space known as Erwin Square.
